Setting Up RUMLogNG with The Elecraft K3S: Tips and Tricks for Smooth Operation

I am still in Alabama and enjoying my new MacBook Air with the M2 processor. In this post we will setup RUMLogNG and WSJT-X with the Elecraft K3S and I'll show you my trick (legal) for chasing DX.

RumLogNG Elecraft K3S

RUMLogNG is a powerful logging software that offers a wide range of features for amateur radio operators. When combined with the Elecraft K3S transceiver, it is great for managing contacts and your transceiver. Below, we will walk you through the process of setting up RUMLogNG with the Elecraft K3S, ensuring a seamless integration that maximizes efficiency and performance.

See my previous post:Optimizing Power Settings for Elecraft K3S and WSJT-X: A Comprehensive Guide

To begin, it is important to check that you have the latest version of RUMLogNG installed on your computer. I am using a new Apple MacBook Air M2. This can be easily downloaded from the official RUMLogNG website or the app store using the MacOS. Once installed, connect your Elecraft K3S to your computer using a USB cable (see my previous post)

Next, it is crucial to configure the CAT (Computer Aided Transceiver) settings in RUMLogNG to enable communication between the software and the Elecraft K3S. Navigate to the "Preferences" menu in RUMLogNG and select the "CAT" tab. Here, you can specify the CAT command set for the Elecraft K3S, which is "Elecraft K3S-Ctrl" in this case. Additionally, you can customize various CAT parameters such as polling interval and timeout values to suit your preferences.See the video below.

Tips and Tricks for Smooth Operation of RUMLogNG and Elecraft K3S: Enhancing Efficiency and Performance

  1. Utilize the DX Cluster Integration: RUMLogNG offers integration with popular DX clusters, allowing you to receive real-time information about active DX stations. This feature can greatly enhance your operating efficiency by providing valuable insights into current propagation conditions and enabling you to quickly identify and contact rare or sought-after stations. To enable DX cluster integration, navigate to the "Preferences" menu in RUMLogNG and select the "DX Cluster" tab. Here, you can specify the DX cluster server and customize various display options. More on this in an upcoming video.
  2. Use Auto - CQ answer for new ones (FT8 & FT4 only). RUMlog can command WSJT-X to answer cq calls in FT8/4 mode. This feature isn’t designed for a full automatically operation, it’s just an operational help to react very quickly on short band openings. Information from the dx-spot window will be used. To activate this feature, check the box Auto in the Network window. Attention: The transceiver can go to the transmit state now without any further user action! The Auto option will be disabled, when is band is changed. Since this option is active for new ones only, you have to configure your DX-Alarms in the Preferences. You should disable the option wkd b4 in the DX-Spot window to prevent calling the same station again and again. If you don’t get a response from the dx station after three transmissions, RUMlog cancels this attempt. This station is blocked now for 20 minutes. When WSJT-X aborts the QSO, this station will not become blocked. - RUMLogNG documentation.

In conclusion, RUMLogNG with the Elecraft K3S can greatly enhance your operating experience as an amateur radio operator. RUMLogNG is a superb MacOS log for DX chasing. By following the guide and watching the included videos above, you can seamlessly integrate these two powerful tools and unlock their full potential. Additionally, by utilizing tips and tricks such as DX cluster integration and macros, you can further enhance efficiency and performance, making your operating sessions more productive and enjoyable. So, go ahead and explore the possibilities that RUMLogNG and the Elecraft K3S offer, and take your amateur radio experience to new heights.
